Members of the Carroll County Family Center Y could soon have more room for fitness activities, more room for children to play and more multipurpose spaces thanks to a renovation and expansion expected to begin this summer.

The expansion will add approximately 5,000 square feet to the existing 24,000-square-foot center located at 1719 Sykesville Road. By expanding, the Y estimates it will be able to serve 1,500 more people.

Funding for the renovation and expansion will come as a result of a partnership with The Powers Companies, a regional builder/developer that agreed to purchase the Y’s building and property and lease it back to the Y for 25 years, with renewal options.

“We are delighted with this arrangement as it allows us to both improve services to existing members and at the same time bring our charitable mission to more residents of Carroll County,” said Ron Nawrot, chairman of the Y’s Carroll County Community Advisory Board.

The Y also has announced that it is selling the former Westminster Inn on South Center Street, which the Y purchased in 2007.

The renovations are expected to be complete by the end of the year with the center remaining open throughout the project.

Details of the renovation are still under development but improvements under consideration include added multi-purpose spaces, family locker rooms, an expanded child play area and expanded fitness space.

The new facility will be named the Hill Family Center Y in honor of long-time Y volunteers and supporters, Marty and Kelly Hill, and the Hill family including Jennifer Hill-Bybczyk and Martin Hill, local developers and philanthropists.
