A little over an hour away is a brand new children’s museum that will get your kids thinking, and they won’t even know it.
The Delaware Children’s Museum in Wilmington opened this spring and is the state’s first and only museum built just for kids. It is 37,000 square feet of space filled with exhibits that will build imaginative minds through play and math-, science- and technology-focused learning, according to a press release.
Exhibits at the museum include:
• Stratosphere is a 30-foot diameter climbing structure that allows kids to climb to a circular platform that overlooks the lobby entrance. The upper level is wheelchair accessible.
• Funky Forest is an interactive ecosystem where kids can shape the environment by pressing their bodies against video walls to create new trees and diverting water to keep the trees alive.
• The Power of Me lets kids test and explore their own capabilities through active and interactive exhibits. This will help them to understand how the body works and how they can help theirs stay healthy.
• ECOnnect lets kids roll up their sleeves and discover the workings of nature through activities such as a an interactive stream table.
• Training Wheels, a transportation-themed area with a toddler-sized train, an auto shop with a miniature care and a padded boat for early walkers to move around in.
• Studio D is a space for hands-on creative expression in a variety of artistic media from weaving to printmaking to sculpting and painting.
The museum is located in the Riverfront section of Wilmington and costs $12 per person (free for children younger than 1). Parking is free.
