Did you always want a little sister or a little brother? Well now’s your chance.

In recognition of National Mentoring Month, Jewish Big Brother Big Sister is calling for volunteers to provide support for children who need mentors. Each Big Brother or Big Sister is matched with a child from a single-parent home or a teen who needs guidance.

“Our priority … is our commitment to providing long-term mentoring,” said Barbara Gradet, executive director of Jewish Community Services (JCS), which runs the program. “These relationships result in positive educational and social benefits, improving children’s chances to succeed.”

According to research, children with mentors are more likely to stay in school and earn better grades; avoid risky behaviors like drug or alcohol use; and have positive family and peer relationships.

JCS is especially in need of Big Brothers to mentor boys in the community currently on the waiting list. Mentors only need to spend a few hours each month with their little brother or sister.

“Helping a youngster who may come from a challenging environment is rewarding,” said Michael Gordet, a big brother from Baltimore. “You can see a shy child come out of his shell, or see the ear-to-ear smile when your Little tries something he didn’t think possible.”

Volunteers receive training and ongoing support from JCS Big Brother Big Sister professionals. For details call 410-466-9200 or visit www.jcsbaltimore.org.
