Sore throat, 102-degree fever, raspy cough — your little one wakes up with these symptoms. What do you do?
If your pediatrician’s office is closed, consider a trip to your home computer to try a new interactive online symptom checker.
The Everyday Health Symptom Checker is an interactive, physician-led tool that goes beyond what the current class of online symptom checkers offer — generally just a list of potential conditions.
www.everydayhealth.com/symptom-checker is an interactive video symptom triage tool. Created by a team of emergency room physicians, it interviews online users about their risk for certain conditions and provides recommendations based on the answers provided. To do so, the symptom checker uses a technology that analyzes more than 3,000 symptoms across all conditions and age groups. The technology that powers the Everyday Health Symptom Checker also supports a decision-making tool used by the VA Medical Centers and the University of Central Florida student health services.
“Through millions of assessments, the symptom checker program has been shown to appropriately identify emergencies, while reducing unnecessary ER and clinic visits,” said Dr. Stephen Schueler, CEO and Founder of DSHI Systems, which created the technology. “At a time of heightened awareness with the H1N1 virus where a sniffle or cough is cause for concern, using this site can mean the difference between an unwarranted and costly late-night trip to the ER or knowing it is okay to wait until the morning to contact your primary care physician.”
