Sander’s Corner Restaurant
Dine by the shores of Loch Raven Reservoir
True, Sanders’ Corner Restaurant is one-of-a-kind. A side-of-the road stop overlooking the Loch Raven watershed, it dates back to 1886. Through the generations, it has evolved from a blacksmith shop/post office to a general store to the homey place it is today, serving traditional American fare.
But as my beau and his daughters found on a recent Sunday evening, it’s patronage is an older crowd and there was no kids menu. But our waitress said the kitchen could make grilled cheese or small portions of pasta with butter or tomato sauce.
Sanders’ menu features an array of beef, chicken, seafood and pasta entrees, all served with two sides ($11.95-$24.95). Mary chose the fried oysters with a double side of applesauce ($17.95); Elisabeth selected a crab-cake sandwich, sans the bread, and fries ($13.50). Roger ordered the stuffed flounder ($21.95), and I had the soft shell crab ($18.95).
All of us found the food to be tasty, except Mary. The larger variety of oysters on her plate were unfamiliar, not the bite-sized ones she has eaten before. Even so, our waitress was very accommodating and exchanged the dish for broiled scallops, which Mary declared to be “awesome” and gobbled up.
Dessert was not to be missed here, as the vanilla ice cream with peanut butter was homemade and a two-scoop portion ($4) was easily split between the two girls. Ice cream is definitely kid-friendly.
