Volunteers given chance to shine

Maryland Family Magazine | 10/11/04

The search is on for the Maryland’s top youth volunteers.
For the 10th year in a row, Prudential Financial and the National
Association of Secondary School Principals have teamed up to
present the Prudential Spirit of Community Award to the top high
school and middle school student volunteer in each state.
As the nation’s largest youth recognition program based solely on
community service, the Spirit of Community Award seeks to honor
teens who are helping the less fortunate, promoting health and
safety, protecting the environment or serving their community in
any other way they find necessary.
The awards are open to all students in grades 5 though 12.
Community schools and organizations choose local honorees, who
then compete at the state level for a $1,000 award, engraved silver
medallion and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., with a
parent. Ten students are then chosen at the national level to
receive a $5,000 award, a gold medallion and $25,000 worth of
products donated in their name to needy children in their area.
“We’ve seen a tremendous number of remarkable young Marylanders
since we created this program in 1995,” said Prudential Chairman
and CEO Arthur Ryan. “We’re delighted to be able to call attention
to their selfless acts of volunteerism and to give them the
recognition they so richly deserve.”
Applications will be accepted through Oct. 29 and can be obtained
at area secondary schools, YMCAs or by calling 1-888-450-9961.
