Want a host of new recipes at your fingertips every month that are
sure to appeal to your family?
“The Six O’clock Scramble”, an e-mail newsletter published by
Aviva Goldfarb, provides great recipes that can be prepared in less
than 30 minutes.
After self-publishing a cookbook, “Peanut Butter Stew and
Couscous, Too,” Goldfarb, a mom from Chevy Chase, decided to
market her recipes over the Internet.
“I wanted to find the easiest and fastest way to distribute my
recipes,” she explained. Initially, her idea met with a lukewarm
reception, so she gave herself a three-month deadline for potential
business. Formerly employed in media-relations for a Washington,
D.C. non-profit group, Goldfarb sent her first issue to everyone she
knew. She didn’t have to wait long for business to pick up — within
weeks, she received positive feedback.
“I’m lucky I have a lot of friends that helped me along the way,”
she says.
“The Scramble” celebrated its first anniversary in July and boasts
over 400 subscribers in 30 states. It provides weekly menus,
including a recipe-coded grocery list.
“If you shop for one week, you will be more likely to cook the
meals because you have the ingredients in-hand,” says Goldfarb.
A mom of two children, ages 5 and 7, Goldfarb says, “I think of
myself as an entrepreneur. I found a way to combine my love for
writing, cooking and my creativity. Plus, I have a lot of energy.”
Goldfarb believes in simple, kid-friendly meals that the whole
family will enjoy. She even suggests substitute ingredients for the
pickiest palates. Some of her menus include Lemon Herbed Chicken
Tenderloins, Cincinnati Chili, Asian Turkey Burgers and Farfalle
with Feta, Pine Nuts and Tomatoes.
